Autograph letter signed : Abbotsford [near Melrose], to John Gibson, [1826] Aug. 5.

Discussing the repayment of his debt (for his nephew Walter's outfit) to Gibson and discussing the Trust Deed and balance of other debts; referring to the potential profit to come from the publication of his work on Napoleon; saying he instructed Cadell to send Gibson the money; mentioning that payments to his sister-in-law (£150) and to support Charles at College (£300) have reduced his income to £1150, which is "a very good one certainly, but there is much to do with it." Promising to inform the Trustees if he writes anything under his own name or as "the author of Waverly."
